Safer neighbourhood TEAM (SNT) Report
At the previous meeting a resident had expressed concern at the anti social behaviour and drug crime being common around the Tolworth Close area. This was unpleasant for residents and it was agreed that the area would be closely monitored and targeted patrols would be working in the area. Officers reported that intelligence gathering has helped the police and patrolling in the area.
A speeding event has been conducted on Raeburn Avenue in the past month with our local police team and specialist traffic officers from the Wembley area. The event was a success with a number of vehicles being stopped for speeding and other vehicle offences, and they hope to plan more of these events in the future.
An operation centred on ebikes and scooters was recently undertaken on Tolworth Broadway where these vehicles were stopped and checks made. More operations are planned.
5 Residents Questions
A question from the first resident related to the speeding problems seen on a daily basis on Raeburn Avenue. It was generally agreed that the situation is worse with increased traffic on the road using Berrylands as a short cut due to other roads in the area being closed or having roadworks on them. The resident asked for more speeding events to take place on the road, or slow traffic down by narrowing the road in places. The road at certain times of the day does not appear safe when there are many school children trying to cross it. In response to the question the officers said they hope to plan more events but these are costly to run and the police team with the speed guns come from the Wembley area. A second resident expressed concerns on the speed of traffic on Warren Drive. Her house has a speed detection sign outside and she constantly observes the lights flashing red to notify drivers of their speed. A third resident expressed his concern of speeding on Beresford Avenue and requested that the speed camera on the road be moved to a better position on the street. He asked if the police could post messages up on Met Engage to make the public that speeding is being closely monitored in the area. In response the police confirmed they will request more operations in the area to deter speeding.
A resident living in Grand Avenue spoke to spread awareness of a burglary she had at home last September. Cameras are installed in the house and four people can be seen entering and leaving her home. Jewellery was taken in the burglary but no one has been arrested and the case has been closed. Her home is opposite the school and she was surprised there was no CCTV on the street nor and CCTV on the surrounding roads. She asked if more CCTV could be available in the area to help stop crime.
A resident asked how we communicate with the local PCSO's. We have existing WhatsApp groups in the Alexandra Ward area with one admin crime group for all street admins, and then street groups that each admin is responsible for. Both PCSO's in our area are members of the admin crime group and historically all admins use this group to alert each other and the local PCSO's when there is any suspicious activity, anti social behaviour, or crime in any of our streets as well as using 999 when necessary. She queries if the PCSO's are using the WhatsApp group at all. These groups have proved to be very effective in the past and the street networks know they can use these groups for fast reporting. In response the PCSO's said they are not using WhatsApp and their preferred method is to act on any alerts coming through their internal met engage system. They explained that as an alert reaches them both PCSO's are alerted at the same time and they respond accordingly. They are happy for admins to message them using their internal met engage system but there is no knowledge on how to do this. The police promised to investigate communication and advise on the email address or other methods we should use. Once we know the new communication methods street admins can be advised.
A resident expressed his concern on lack of information regarding crime and arrests made in the area. He suggested that rather than hearing of crimes through word of mouth it would be far more effective to use a message board on the met engage platform giving clear factual information. In response the police stated that currently crime in the area is low but if crime does pick up the met engage platform will be used as a message/alert system.
Regular patrolling has been a priority in Tolworth Close in this quarter and it will be extended to Tolworth Broadway for the next quarter. The residents stated that drinking and begging was a concern on the Broadway but the PCSO's pointed out that there is less begging lately.
Speeding on Raeburn Avenue and surrounding streets remains a concern.
No other business was discussed.
After the meeting I have reached out to the Specialist traffic unit. I have asked if they can complete random targeted speeding operations on the ward whenever they get a chance. They have acknowledge that and will try to include it in their patrols on top of the operations we have planned with them within the area.
Also I just wanted to remind residents to please make sure they are keeping their car keys in Faraday pouches/Tins including spare keys to make sure high theft devices can't receive a signal and making sure that their cars are locked. If you would like further information on security please take a look at secure by design.
